Sew Not A Square - For Project QUILTING 14.5

Project QUILTINGS 14.5 selected SEW NOT A SQUARE as the theme for the fifth bi-weekly project for the 2023 season. The entry must not use squares to create it and it can’t end up as a square. My favorite Dresden qualifies as there are no squares here.

Crossover II Cutting System with Rounded Dresden Wedge Dye used to cut.

I popped out my Crossover II Cutting System by Crafter’s Edge along with the Rounded Dresden Die Set. Cutting six layers with each pass, three blades can be cut from one charm square.

All these Dresden blades are SEW NOT A SQUARE fitting this week’s theme perfectly. With an abundance of rounded blades cut, they are arranged into four Dresden blocks. Twelve blades are accurately stitched with a 1/4” seam. Seams are all pressed open to achieve perfectly flat circles.

This colorful charm pack is auditioned with several sold colors for the backing and center circle. The bright turquoise won out and is layered with Hobbs 80/20 batting and stitched on my BERNINA B 790 Plus. With a deadline of noon on Sunday, there are a few more steps to complete.

The beauty of this project is there is NO hand stitching or binding to create. After stitching the backing with batting to the front on the scalped edges, the seams are trimmed and clipped before flipping right

A double layer of fabric for the center circle is bonded together with Misty Fuse for added stability. A second layer of Misty Fuse is added to the wrong side before using the Crossover II cutting system to create perfect circles. The BERNINA triple blanket stitch adds a decorative touch to the center.

The four mug rugs finished at 7 x 7 inches. Look for this work and others in my Etsy Shop.

Additional views of the completed project can be used as mug rugs, snack mats, mini placemats, or candle mats. Wherever you need an extra pop of color or protection on a table.
