MY COMPLEMENTS - FOR PROJECT QUILTING 17.5
Challenge 17.5 for Project QUILTING is My Complements. Complementary colors are straight across the color wheel from each other. Yellow and purple, orange and blue, and green and red are the primary and secondary color match-ups. These color combos are often used for sports teams, marching bands and holiday colors. To avoid these similarities, color tones can be altered. Using a rich, deep color with a soft, mellow color makes these combinations more pleasing for quilted items.
THE PLAN
As I eyed my stash for this project, this rich orange and soft blue called to me. They are from an assortment of coordinated fat quarters that spoke to me at a national quilt show louder than they did when I got them home!
Pairing the above fabric with my Crossover II cutting system will allow this project to be completed both precisely and quickly.
THE CONSTRUCTION
Using my Crossover II die cutter, 24 wedges are accurately cut.
The center circle fabric was cut after applying MistyFuse to the wrong side.
The twelve wedges are stitched together with a 1/4' seam. Seams are pressed open to keep the finished project as flat as possible. Auditioning the center circle, which will be applied to the finished product.
The quilt sandwich under the needle consists of a layer of batting, right-side-up backing fabric, and finally the Dresden unit, wrong-side-up, on top. Precisely stitching and accurate pivoting shape the curved edges. Batting is trimmed close to the stitching while inward points are carefully clipped.
Each quilt unit was carefully turned right side out through that tiny center hole—such a win-win, as no hand sewing is required. The Dresden curves are quilted through all layers with machine stitching. The center circle is fused over the opening. Setting my BERNINA 790 Plus to a triple blanket stitch, the circle is machine appliqued as the final step.
THE FINISHED PROJECT
With no need for additional binding, the pair is ready to use. It finished at approximately 7 X 7 inches.
