Wildflowers Art Quilt - Island Batik One Die Wonder

Manke, Sally - 03.2020 Accuquilt.jpg

The Island Batik Ambassador project for March is to use the Hattie's Choice AccuQuilt Block on Board die. All of the shapes needed to create a quilt block on a single die.

These block on a board dies are a great way to use scraps so I sorted through piles before deciding on ten focus fabrics. Dies include specialized dog-ears and 1/4” seam allowance for easy alignment and piecing.

No, this is NOT candy corn! It's actually my sample block using Hattie's Choice AccuQuilt Block on Board die. The Island Batik Ambassadors’ monthly challenge requires that the block still be recognizable when the quilt is completed. I had to reign myself in a bit but started with the Wildflower Throw Quilt pattern which is available for free download on the Accuquilt website. I'll make five of these blocks before I strike out with my own variation of this design.

Work continues on the creation of five blocks using Accuquilt Hattie's Choice Block on a Board. 1.) Notice that every piece is cut accurately on a clearly labeled die. 2.) Chain piecing the small triangles to the larger diamond shapes. 3.) Pressing all seams open aided by The Strip Stick by Babb Enterprises and my Oliso iron. 4.) Five scrappy Island Batik Hattie's Choice blocks are complete. Pedal extensions are started on the bottom left yellow and orange block.

All five blocks using complete. Points were added to the block using the GO! Qube Mix & Match 8" Block die set. Each blossom was created with scraps from my Island Batik stash with the background cut from Island Batik solid black for contrast.

It's time to deviate from the Accuquilt Hattie's Choice pattern I was following. Fortunately, I have the perfect Island Batik stash builder 5" strip pack to inspire me. It's time to engage the brain to make the esthetic desired mesh with the math needed to create it. Auditioning stem width then cutting Island Batik Solid Black to fit.

A variety of greens are stitched to the flower blocks to create stems. With only a couple of cutting errors, the black background fits between stems and blooms. All piecing is completed with Aurifil Color Builder thread and Schmetz CHROME Microtex Needles.

The Hattie's Choice die is being used in an unconventional way for the leaves on this art quilt. Die B and C are used to cut a variety of green leaves from the stem fabrics. Using silicone sheets, MistyFuse is bonded to one side of the green leaves. The Smaller B pieces are bonded to the larger C pieces before trimming on all four edges.

The wildflowers art quilt is on the Handi Quilter Amara using Dragon Flies design by Vicki Malaski. This design is stitched with a sample spool variegated Superior Brand King Tut thread I picked up at an American Quilter's Society Quilt Week. Hobbs 80/20 Quilt Batting was used in this quilt.

This art quilt is ready for some bling and flower embellishments will be perfect. Using the Whimsical Flower Maker and an assortment of metallic and specialty threads from Superior threads and Wonderfil Specialty Threads, the wildflowers spring to life (See detail photos below). Templates include three graduated sizes so they can be stacked to create a variety of color and texture. Beads will be added for even more sparkle and shine!
